How much does an Odoo version migration cost
How much does it cost to migrate Odoo to a new version? What drives the price up, a real KMEE reference and why staying on an old version also costs money.
Closing the series, the question everyone asks first and that I left for last: how much does it cost?
I will give you a number, and I will explain why it is only the start of the conversation.
A real reference
At KMEE, a migration for a new client usually starts at R$ 10,000 (around USD 2,000), with or without Enterprise. For clients who have the migration package in their support plan, the migration has no separate cost: it is already in the contract.
The “starts at” carries almost all the weight of that sentence. What drives the price up is rarely the source or the target version. It is the layers I covered in the previous posts.
What drives the price up
How many modules exist beyond the standard. Each OCA, third-party or custom module is one more piece to port, migrate and test.
Whether those modules already exist in the new version. An OCA module the community has already ported to the target version costs far less than one that still has to be ported.
The quality of the custom code. Well-written code migrates with predictable effort. Code with raw SQL, changes to Odoo’s core or no tests needs a cleanup first.
How much was built in Studio. A database with heavy Studio customization usually costs more, because part of it has to be rebuilt in the new version.
The timeline follows the same logic. A nearly standard database migrates fast. A database with many custom modules takes weeks, and most of that time goes into porting and testing modules, much more than into converting the database.
Standing still also costs
The budget is one side of the math. The other is the cost of not migrating.
On Enterprise, Odoo’s agreement, in section 5.1, sets an extra fee of 25% of the annualized subscription price for customers on a version older than the three most recent ones. Outside standard support, security and compatibility fixes become extended support, paid separately. And every skipped version makes the next migration more expensive: whoever waits until something breaks ends up migrating several hops at once, in a crisis and at high risk.
I advocate planned migration, from even version to even version. Over the years the total spend ends up similar, only spread out, and without stopping the company in an emergency.
Why the price comes out of the assessment
There is no honest migration quote without looking at what runs in the database. Two companies on the same version can face migrations of completely different effort, because of the four layers.
The first step, then, is an assessment. KMEE runs this migration assessment free of charge: we map what runs in your Odoo, separate what migrates directly from what needs work first, and hand back a plan with a clear scope and investment.
